Anthony comes for a few more sessions. We talk about how he can use his thinking brain—his prefrontal cortex—to be smart around dogs. Not all dogs are friendly, and some should be avoided, but he is able to analyze and decide without setting off his amygdala every time. Will he worry sometimes when he sees a big dog? Sure. Will he change his plans to avoid a threatening dog that he doesn’t know? Absolutely. But he can go back to his normal activities knowing that he has a better plan to make these decisions.

Anthony was a wonderful client, but his story is no different from what we see over and over again in our offices. This is exactly what we want you to learn: once you and your child understand the importance of moving toward the risk, of talking to your brain in a different way, and letting your brain and body react and relearn, then your lives can improve quickly.
It’s not possible for kids to always feel secure. They will grow as they tolerate an uncertain outcome and step forward anyway. If kids don’t find a way to encourage themselves to step forward, they will either keep stepping back from challenging tasks or continually grab some crutch to make them feel secure.
The next chapter gives you some breathing skills that aid in quieting the amygdala and the worries of the prefrontal cortex so that you and your child can get back to work in a problem-solving way. While many people focus on relaxation as a primary treatment for anxiety, you may be a bit surprised to learn how we incorporate this next puzzle piece into our step-into-it approach. Or maybe, by this point, you won’t be surprised at all.
